Blue Health Initiatives: Ten Years. One Mission. Healthier Kansas Communities.

Ten Years In, Blue Health Initiatives Continues to Put Community First

For the past 10 years, Blue Health Initiatives has focused on supporting healthier people, stronger communities and a brighter future for Kansas.

Launched in 2016 by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS), Blue Health Initiatives was created to invest in community‑driven solutions that improve health where Kansans live, work and play. Over the last decade, that commitment has guided partnerships across the state—addressing not only access to care, but the everyday conditions that influence overall well‑being.

More than health care

At its core, Blue Health Initiatives reflects a long‑term approach to improving health outcomes across Kansas. Rather than focusing solely on medical care, the initiative supports solutions that tackle broader challenges—such as access to nutritious food, opportunities for physical activity and equitable resources that help communities thrive.

By working alongside local organizations and partners, Blue Health Initiatives helps communities identify their most pressing needs and advance solutions built to last.

That work is guided by four key focus areas, each addressing health from a different perspective.

Pathways to a Healthy Kansas
Pathways supports community coalitions working to remove barriers to healthy living by bringing local partners together around shared goals. Through guidance, resources and collaboration, the initiative helps communities identify priorities and take action on solutions that support long‑term health.

Trail Blazers
Trail Blazers invests in innovative, community‑driven pilot programs. These projects explore new ways to improve health and expand access to care, testing ideas that show promise for long‑term impact.

Healthy Lifestyles
Healthy Lifestyles focuses on prevention and long‑term wellness by supporting programs that encourage physical activity, healthy nutrition and chronic disease management. Across Kansas, this includes initiatives like Fitness Courts, bike share programs and Be the Spark grants for high school Kay Club programs.

Health Equity
Health Equity initiatives work to reduce gaps in health outcomes by supporting community‑driven strategies that address barriers and promote fair opportunities for health and well‑being statewide.

A commitment that goes beyond insurance

“Blue Health Initiatives reflects who Blue Cross is—an organization invested in the health of Kansans beyond insurance coverage,” said Virginia Barnes, director of Blue Health Initiatives. “Every partnership we fund and story we share reflects our commitment to making Kansas the healthiest place to live.”

That purpose has remained consistent over the last decade. Listening to communities and supporting local solutions continues to shape how and where Blue Health Initiatives invests its resources.

Looking ahead

As Blue Health Initiatives enters its second decade, BCBSKS remains focused on strengthening partnerships and supporting community‑led solutions across the state. Building on years of collaboration and learning, the work ahead reinforces a simple belief: lasting community health starts locally.
