After your doctors appointment

Understanding My Insurance, part 7

This post is the final in our series, Understanding My Health Insurance.

Now that you’ve visited your provider, there are a few things to consider to know if this particular provider was a good fit for you.

  • Do you feel like the provider listened to your health needs and concerns?
  • Did you feel cared for?
  • Did you feel you were treated fairly by the office staff?
  • Was the provider able to answer your health-related questions and, if not, provide you with alternate resources to find the answers?

Answering these questions will help you determine if you should continue to receive service from this provider or if you should begin your provider search over again.

You should also be on the lookout for your Explanation of Benefits (EOB). The EOB is a summary that shows how much your health insurer or plan paid, what your financial responsibility may be, and any provider write-offs. This is typically sent to you after every visit to the doctor’s office. Please note that it is not a bill, but a summary to show an overview of your health care expenses.

So that’s it! We’ve showed you some basics of your health coverage, how to choose a provider, and how to prepare for your appointment. We hope this information has empowered you to feel a little more confident in understanding your health insurance coverage. Of course if you have questions, feel free to reach out to us. We’re here for you.
